Why Do Cats Love Boxes?

A plain cardboard box can be an inviting place to investigate or rest. It changes the shape of a familiar room and gives a cat a little retreat they can choose to use.

Choice is part of the appeal

Some cats settle inside a box; others prefer to watch it, walk through it, or ignore it. Let your cat decide. A box is an option to offer, not a space to place or confine them in.

Make a box inviting

Choose a clean, sturdy box with an open exit. Remove staples, loose tape, handles and other pieces your cat could catch or chew. Keep it at floor level in a quiet, accessible location, and replace it if it becomes wet or damaged.

Keep it simple

Start with the box alone and watch the response. If your cat already has a preferred soft resting surface, you can place a familiar washable layer nearby or inside, without crowding the opening.

A box is one part of a richer home

Combine retreats with suitable opportunities to play, observe and scratch. You do not need to buy everything at once; make one small change and see what your cat chooses.
